ABOUT EJF

EJF believes environmental security is a human right.

EJF was founded in 1999 by Steve Trent and Juliette Williams, whose shared experience led to an understanding that we cannot hope to protect wildlife and precious natural places without engaging with local communities, supporting their efforts to be the stewards of the land and water upon which their own lives depend; those for whom environmental security is not a luxury, but an everyday necessity.

Focused on innovation, cost-effectiveness and efficiency, EJF established new ways of addressing the inter-linked challenges to environmental security, social justice and human rights. As a small NGO, we see our role as a catalyst, highlighting issues that are otherwise 'off the radar' and delivering measurable results that improve people's lives and livelihoods, and protect the natural environment.

EJF have prompted arrests of pirate fishing vessels in West Africa, compelled one of the world’s most brutal and corrupt regimes to sign International Labour Organisation Conventions on child labour, placed the plight of ‘climate refugees’ on the international agenda, and campaigned for policymakers to support a global ban on the deadly pesticide, endosulfan – winning our case to outlaw this killer chemical in 2011.

Our Vision

A world where natural habitats and environments can sustain, and be sustained by, the communities that depend upon them for their basic needs and livelihoods.

OUR MISSION IS TO PROTECT PEOPLE AND PLANET

We will use your donation to continue to work on issues that otherwise go ignored, bringing awareness and enabling vulnerable people to protect their own environment.

EJF strives to:

  • Protect the natural environment and the people and wildlife that depend upon it by linking environmental security, human rights and social need
  • Create and implement solutions where they are needed most – training local people and communities who are directly affected to investigate, expose and combat environmental degradation and associated human rights abuses
  • Provide training in the latest video technologies, research and advocacy skills to document both the problems and solutions, working through the media to create public and political platforms for constructive change
  • Raise international awareness of the issues our partners are working locally to resolve.
